Now that I have thoroughly annoyed you all with my frustrating card experiments, you should have some sympathy for scientists. Imagine the scientists who discovered that DNA were in a helix shape; they didn't have scanners or anything, they imagined the shape in their heads from the data of hundreds of chemical experiments. That's a freakish kind of creativity.
From the discovery of genetics by Mendel to actually sequencing the genome it took about 140 years and dozens of scientists. http://homepage.smc.edu/hgp/history.htm
